The Archduke Ralph has had his six month review with his vet Nicola at Witham View in Woodhall Spa. She gave him a thorough going over, stretching out his legs and a good all over ‘feel’, some of which caused him to swallow hard, but the good news is the regime we have followed over the last few months is paying off. His mobility is a little bit better and he has regained some muscle tone in his rear end and does not look his twelve and half years. Nicola was especially pleased that his weight has been kept at a good level, she told me the worst thing for an arthritic dog is to be overweight, and of course limited exercise an lead to weight gain.
Shorter walks, gentle play, enrichment activities, home adaptation, hydrotherapy and pain relief are all working together in the multi modal approach recommended by the experts to make the old fella’s life more comfortable. We can reduce his medication and save the Pardale V for the ‘bad days’ or when he has done a bit more than usual – such as hydrotherapy, and just stick with the Onsior and Gabapentin plus YuMove supplements. Obviously it is a case of watch and wait as arthritis does not get better and he will progress but at least we have it under control for now and it has not spread from his hips and front legs yet. The hydrotherapy will now go into ‘maintenance mode’ as it is something he tolerates rather than enjoys, so probably every three weeks.
Incidentally Pardale V is currently not available so it maybe a case of human Paracetomol when we run out. As a rule of thumb the dose is 10mg per 10kg of dog, so half a tablet will be OK now and again for the Archduke Ralph who weighs in at a modest 23kg.
So, as you were Archduke!
